Are Contact Lenses Right for Your Child?

The older children get, the more they tend to care about their appearance. It’s no surprise then, that many children who wear glasses want to have the option to switch to contact lenses. But how do you know if contact lenses are right for your child? Eden Prairie Eye Care is here to help! What are the Benefits of Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses can help your child:

  • See Better: Contact lenses account for peripheral vision, which allows your child to see clearly on either side of them.

  • Feel Better: If your child feels self-conscience about their glasses, contact lenses can offer a self-esteem boost. This can lead to improvements in their academic and social life.

  • Play Better: Active children always have the risk of breaking or losing their glasses, especially if they play sports. Contact lenses are a convenient way for those children to “stay in the game”.

Contact lenses are a great option for many children. However, it’s important to remember that contact lenses are also a medical device that requires responsibility and proper care. Is Your Child Too Young for Contact Lenses?

If you are a contact lens wearer yourself, you’re probably familiar with the fitting process. However, this will be slightly different for your child. Here’s how the process will go:

  • The optometrist will perform a routine eye exam checking vision, screening for eye disease, and your child’s prescription.

  • Your eye doctor will make a recommendation based on your child’s eye health, lifestyle, and personal preferences.

  • Your child will receive a training on inserting and removing contact lenses as well as instructions for proper care.

  • Some optometrists might give your child a schedule for wearing contact lenses during the first week so their eyes have a chance to adapt.

  • After the first week, your eye doctor may assess the comfort and fit of the contact lenses. It’s not unusual for a child to have to try out different options before they find the best fit.

As a child grows, their contact lens fit and prescription may change as well. That’s why it’s important to have a comprehensive eye exam every year!
